The
Beauseant
from the archives of The
Most Revd. Gary Beaver KGCTJ
Our Order adopted a striped white and black banner, called the Beauseant,
after the original piebald horse; and this word also became the battle-cry. The
Beauseant is made of equally divided black
upper and white lower horizontal blocks, it was never flown as a flag but
suspended from a cross-bar. As it was hung from the top and left side, the
banner could be seen in full wherever the knights were [pic shows an early
manuscript drawing].
The banner was the responsibility of the Seneschal for ceremonies, but
in time of military engagement it fell to the Mareschal to carry and protect the
Beauseant, who always carried a spare as a contingency should the original be
destroyed or captured. The carrier of the banner into battle was also called the
“Gonfalonier” which is taken from the word “Gonfalon” meaning a banner
that had the blessing of the Pope.
